>Doctors have declared former NTV presenter Janet Kanini Ikua as cancer free ending months of pain that the public figure has endured.

Kanini took to Facebook on Friday February 12, 2016 where she made the healing public.

“My dear friends, relatives, colleagues, supporters, prayer warriors. I have wonderful news! Our prayers have been answered! I am redeemed from the affliction of cancer!
God has remained true to His word and healed me from Cancer and I give Him all Glory and Honour and Praise for this far that He has brought me!
My doctors in India were amazed by the results of the PET MRI scan – the cancer lesions that had been in my liver, bones, abdomen, lymph nodes and lungs are gone!” She wrote.

Kanini went on to appreciate the support from Kenyans who contributed for her medication in India.

But she also took the opportunity to condole families of those who have lost the fight against cancer and called on authorities to ensure that cancer treatment was made available locally.

“I look forward to people in positions of policy-making and medical care stepping forward to create changes that will help Kenyans as a whole, all Kenyans in every socio-economic class. I look forward to more medical students specializing to become oncologists and radiologists, to take care of the masses of patients so that we are self sufficient. Twelve oncologists for the entire country are too few!”

Up until 2015, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) was the only government facility that offered cancer treatment in the country.

But in 2015, the government started opening up cancer centres across the country under the ‘Manage Equipment Services’ programme that cost KSh 38 billion out of which KSh 21 billion was for purchasing cancer treatment equipment.

At least 94 hospitals across the country – 2 in each county – are set to have fully functional cancer treatment centres when the programme is completed.

In 2015, there were 1, 300 cancer patients on the waiting list at KNH while the private hospitals could only screen 156 patients.

One session goes for KSh 500 at KNH.

Following the cancer crisis in Kenya,

Already, the government has embarked on an investigation touching on at least 880 doctors.

For each referral, a doctor is reported to pocket up to KSh 200,000 from the Indian contacts, money that is lumped onto the patient’s bill significantly increasing the cost of their treatment yet they can be treated locally.

It is reported that 10,000 Kenyans flock hospitals outside the country every year – mostly in India – to seek treatment in cases that can otherwise be locally managed.
